The Technical Brief

Refurbish two 850kW ammonia screw compressor packages, re-pipe suction and discharge headers, and replace the secondary propylene glycol pumping manifold.

Site & Operating Constraints

The facility stores over $14M in perishable seafood and dairy stock. Room temperatures had to remain locked at -22°C continuously throughout hot work and pipe header replacements.

Execution Methodology & Works Delivered

  • Installed a temporary external glycol chiller skid with bypass manifolds to sustain cooling loads
  • Isolated, purged, and chemically swept the existing ammonia circuits under certified refrigeration procedures
  • Fabricated Schedule 40 low-temperature carbon steel headers with 100% radiographic weld inspection
  • Replaced twin oil separators, installed automated variable-frequency drive controls on compressor motors
  • Executed ammonia charge balancing and vacuum hold verification down to 500 microns

Verified Outcome

Total system coefficient of performance (COP) improved by 18.4%, saving approximately $4,200 monthly in electrical demand charges while keeping storage temperatures constant throughout.
